Tiziano clearly expressed his wish to be buried in the Basilica of the Frari. The imposing tomb where the artist was buried on August 27, 1576 was executed by Louis and Peter Zandomeneghi, who were disciples of Canova.

The mausoleum is located at the foot of the Crucifix altar, for which Tiziano made his last piece, the Pietà, currently on display at the Gallerie dell'Accademia.

In the center of the monument, a statue of Tiziano is crowned with laurel leaves and accompanied by the allegories of Universal Nature, Genius of knowledge in addition to those of Painting, Sculpture, Graphics and Architecture .

On the corners of the base, Charles V and Ferdinand I of Austria, the two emperors related to the great painter's name, are represented.

The five bas-reliefs recall the most significant religious works by the grand painter: The Assumption in the center, the Martyrdom of Saint Peter of Verona to the left, the Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence to the right (currently at the Gesuiti). Above the entablature: The Visitation on the right and The Descent from the Cross to the left.

At the top of the monument stands the lion of Saint Mark with the Asburgo coat of arms.
