DATE: 1730 POSITION: third altar on the left MEASUREMENTS: 260 x 113 cm METHOD: oil painting
The third altar on the left was built in 1722 as stated in Pauline Loredan Zane's will; there is also a preserved relic of the SS. Cross donated by the heirs of the noble lady.
The Virgin is facing towards a soft light from above that radiates onto her face, already lit by the halo of stars that surrounds her head. Below, the triumph over Satan is allegorically represented by the Virgin's foot crushing the dragon's head who grips an apple in his mouth.
The experimented use of color by Ricci clearly reveals Piazzetta's influence.
