Altar antependium in golden and painted leather

Author: Francesco Guardi
Century: XIX°
DATE: 1835  POSITION: first chapel on the right

The work is part of the series of six antependiums made to adorn the six chapel altars in the church.

They were recently discovered by professor G. M. Pilo, who had no hesitation in attributing them to Francesco Guardi, whom was also entrusted to paint the floral pattern on leather, that is placed in the tympanum, which houses the Virgin of Alvise Vivarini in the sacristy.

The antependium in question was realised in wood using a "poor laquer" technique and depicts scenes of the Madonna and medallions with Passion of Christ stories. The remaining five, conserved in the sacristy, are made of embossed golden and silver leather, decorated with flowers and elegant rococo swirls, and are exposed for the solemnity of Redentore occasion.
